Highlights of the agenda of the UCLG World Council meetings in Hangzhou

From 6 to 9 December the city of Hangzhou, China, will host the UCLG World Council at the kind invitation of the Mayor of Hangzhou, Xu Liyi. The World Council will meet for first time following the election of the new Presidency of the Organization during the Congress in Bogotá last October. Through plenary and business sessions, Policy Councils and meetings of thematic committees, the World Council will discuss the implementation of the decisions taken by the World Council in Bogotá and its 2018 work plan. 

 

Key moments of the programme

On Thursday 7 December, as a prelude to the World Council, a session on Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be held to provide updates on the localization process of the SDGs and introduce the Local4Action Hub.

On the same day, preparatory and committee meetings will take place, including the meeting of the UCLG Committee on Local Economic and Social Development. The meeting of the Committee on Statutory Affairs will also be held on the morning of 7 December, with the meeting of the Financial Management Committee taking place on the afternoon of the same day.

Forum on Smart City and Big Data

Forum on Smart City and Big Data is organized by the city of Hangzhou and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and will be held on the afternoon of 7 December. 

The Opening Ceremony of the UCLG World Council and of the Forum will be held on Wednesday 7 December at 14:30, and will include the participation of Xu Liyi, Mayor of Hangzhou and host of the World Council; Mpho Parks Tau, President of UCLG; and representatives of CPAFFC, UCLG-ASPAC and other officials, and will be followed by an hour-and-a-half of debates. The two round tables that will follow will focus on the following topics: urban governance facilitated by big data; and smart implementation and green sustainable development.

The inaugural sessions of the Policy Councils will be held on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 December.

The statutory meetings of UCLG will enable the world organization to analyze and define the major challenges to be undertaken in 2018, which will be a rich and active year for UCLG and its members covering a wide range of topics.
